About YoungMinds.org.uk - The national charity committed to improving the mental health of all children and young people.

When we think about some of the major social trends and pressures affecting our everyday lives – a much higher divorce rate with many reconstructed and lone parent families, pressures from the media to look good and be wealthy, financial and job instabilities and worries, an increase in the availability of illegal drugs, and the increased threat of terrorist acts - it’s no surprise that there are many young people today have trouble making their way through childhood into adulthood.

There is no doubt that a lot of young people cope well enough with these and other difficulties and worries and are able to make the most of their opportunities. But there are some, quite a significant amount, whose mental health and resilience may not be so robust.

Research from the Office of National Statistics a few years ago showed that one in ten young people between the ages of five and 15 had a diagnosable mental disorder.

Many more young people may not have a mental disorder, but are experiencing problems significant enough to interfere with their ability to get on with their lives. Things get on top of them so that they feel overwhelmed. They may feel depressed or anxious about things and not know how to cope. They may withdraw from friends, misuse drugs or alcohol or become aggressive and get themselves into trouble with the law. When problems persist and become extreme or distressing, there are services and mental health specialists who can provide support.

It’s important to remember though that the mental health of children and young people in our society is everybody’s business. It is as much the concern of parents, teachers, GPs, school nurses etc. as it is of the specialist professionals. We can all make a great deal of difference in supporting young people and improving the general quality of their lives in the community.
This is the message that YoungMinds, the national charity committed to promoting the mental health of all babies, children and young people, conveys. Specialist professionals play a major part in supporting young people with mental health problems and disorders but all of us, in whatever field – parents, teachers, counsellors, health visitors, nursery workers etc. can help to promote the mental health of young people.

YoungMinds highlights the mental health issues young people face and promotes a greater public awareness of their needs. Through our Parents' Information Service, we support parents and carers who are trying to cope with mental health problems affecting their children and teenagers. The organisation also provides information materials for young people on specific mental health issues such as depression and self-harming. YoungMinds works hard to influence decision makers to improve mental health services for young people to help them to overcome or manage their problems and reach their full potential.
