Forbes Technologies standardise on CDR Pumps for tanker unloading pumps

Forbes Technologies, the leading plastic tank manufacturer and environmental specialists have enjoyed using CDR Pumps on their tanker unloading facility (TUF Pumpset) for a number of years, now with the latest design improvements, joint efforts are being made in increasing the marketing activity of this state of the art piece of process plant.

The Forbes TUF Pumpset is designed to alleviate many of the problems associated with conventional methods used for deliveries of hazardous chemicals into static storage vessels, usually completed by pressurising a road tanker barrel.

Risk assessments by safety officers are increasingly concluding that bulk consignments of hazardous chemicals such as concentrated acids should change from pressurised to pumped discharge.

Growing awareness of the hazards of pressurised working has focused attention on Health and Safety and environmental considerations, in particular the need for thorough scrubbing of the ‘air pad’ as the last of the liquid passes into the storage tank.

With Forbes TUF Pumpsets, safe working is now easy and economical. Corrosion free, maintenance free and controllable, at the heart being a CDR Pumps magnetic drive pump to ensure complete containment of the liquid.

Forbes Sales Director Melvyn Jupp says “The TUF pumpset has been in manufacture for a number of years, and has proved to be a very reliable piece of process plant for many of our customers. As legislation drives constant increase in safety, the TUF Pumpset comes into its own as the only purpose built plant available on the market for the safe unloading of chemical from road tankers”

CDR Pumps Managing Director Ashley Fenn says “We are delighted to be continuing our close working relationship with Forbes, we have worked with them successfully for many years, and provide full technical and commercial support to ensure that collectively, their plant and our pumps give the customer many years trouble free and safe operation”

Technical Documentation! Help or Hindrance?

Lets face it, the last thing many of us think of during day-to-day business is the documentation required to support a product or service. It just happens. Someone will do it. Or it doesn't happen at all. So, frequently it ends up being a last minute activity, often undertaken by someone who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time!

Preparing professional documentation is no easy task. It can be time consuming and expensive to produce. Also, it’s often undertaken by someone who either doesn't really like doing it (and therefore quality will naturally suffer), or by someone who isn't really skilled to do it.

However, documentation prepared properly can have huge business benefit whether it's online or on paper. Firstly, it speaks volumes about your brand image. It also underpins the perceived quality of your products or services. It should also act as your first line of customer service…as self-service by your client: How should this product work? What happens if I press this button? What is the service agreement offered? What maintenance is needed? Or, (as a last resort!) which is the right person/number to contact?

Good documentation can also be used as a training aid, a sales tool, a marketing flyer, an email...prepared properly, good documentation can be adjusted quickly and re-purposed to meet any communication need.

So, maybe it's worth thinking a little more about the benefits of having professional documentation to support your business. Easier said than done of course! That's where Author Services Technical (AST) adds value to your business. We can undertake all or part of your documentation needs and let you focus on running your business. We've been supporting industry with our services for over 40 years, and whilst we specialise in the Technical market, we are experienced in supporting many other industries including Software, Finance and even Government departments.

Need Documentation? Need AST!

The Credit Crunch - be prepared - be financially fit

What caused the credit crunch?
- Bad debt in the USA. Because of oor credit underwriting. That and
- Higher oil & utility prices
- Higher taxes
- Higher interest rates

This has led to a lack of investor confidence in the mortgage market. The result lenders have introduced stronger criteria to attract the investors back:

- Re-pricing of products
- Even higher interest rates

Who will it affect?

With personal debt now standing at £1.5 trillion
Increased interest rates & tightening criteria, many people will find themselves unable to borrow at reasonable rates, if at all. With the tightening of criteria and if there is any bad credit record they maybe unable to borrow enough to repay their existing mortgage, they would therefore have to continue paying the new higher rate.

Problems are magnified

If people have:
- Personal loans
- Club cards etc.

Interest rates & charges increased. The result is property repossession even bankruptcy.

This means:
- less money in the economy,
- a slow down in exports,
- a downturn in house price rises,
- and possibly even higher taxes.

After the storm - the financially fit survive

- the BoE may reduce the interest rate early in 2008,
- the demand for housing will continue,
- the rental market should grow,
- the economy will recover

For some the situation will mean disaster, others opportunity. The buy to let market will bring opportunity.
- Repossession bargains
- more rental demand, as people have to live somewhere.

So when times are hard, it is vital that we all look at our financial fitness.

As landlords:
- do we have the right mortgage ?
- Will the rent cover the mortgage repayments & expenses ?
- have we got the best insurance ?

As business owners:
- Are our finances right ?
- Are we utilising all the services on offer ?
- Have we got the least expensive option for us ?
- Are we vunerable ?

"Get advice now" is the best advice

BUGGY BROLLY - hands free umbrella for prams

The Buggy Brolly Company Ltd, was founded by Catherine Duffy after she encountered a problem - how to hold an umbrella and push a pram at the same time. Any parent that has tried to do this will know how difficult it is.

From a simple problem and not being able to find a readily available solution, the process of designing and manufacturing the Buggy Brolly began.

The Buggy Brolly, a hands free brolly, was initially launched last year and proved to be a big hit very quickly. After gaining the feedback from our customers, we decided to make some modifications and improvements to the umbrella and whilst this took some time, it has proved worth the wait.

Our modified hands free brolly is now stronger than ever and has been specifically designed and manufactured for us. It is still as simple and easy to use and if should you get caught in an unexpected wind can be retrieved by simply closing and opening the umbrella again. No more struggling needed!.

With the benefit of a U V Coating the Buggy Brolly can also be used as a sunshade too.

We are now expanding our business due to the demand of our products and now have distributors throught the U.K and abroad which is continuing to grow each day.

Hard Drive Recovery - understanding the value of data backup

Data loss can happen at anytime without warning and according to the 2006 DTI report:

38% of companies experience data loss each year
61% of companies took more than a day to recover from system failures
70% of companies go out of business after a major data loss
42% of all backup media restores fail

The cost of implementing a backup solution will vary depending on the amount of data required to be backed up, how often the backup is run and the type of data being backed-up, the reason for this is simply that large backups require greater media capacity and faster transfer rates to ensure the backup is complete within the non-working hours, the type of data backed-up will have an impacted on the software required to successfully complete a scheduled backup job.

Here are a few things to consider before implementing a backup solution:

What data and how much data needs to be backed-up?
Do you know where all your data and employees data is stored?
Where do the programs you use store the data?
How often do you need to backup the data?
Where are you going to store the backed-up data?
When do you plan to check your backups?
In the event of data loss how quickly can you restore the data?

Remember if you have never done a backup and you haven’t experienced any data loss then you have been LUCKY!

Internet Security a second opinion (Free!)

Have you ever wondered if your Internet Security suite is doing a good job? Well why not test it by getting a second opinion. Here’s what you do, open your Internet browser and go to www.bitdefender.co.uk ,(other online scanners are available), on the front page you will find the option to scan your computer online, next you will be prompted to install a very small ActiveX control which once completed will start the antivirus scan. Once the scan has completed you can return to the website whenever you want to check your computer and the best part about the second opinion (apart from its FREE!) is no additional software is required, therefore current performance is not affected. Included in your Internet Security Suite is a firewall which defends your computers protocols and services from unauthorized users during web browsing. You can check the efficiency of your firewall by going online to https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 click-on the [Proceed] button then click-on the [All Service Ports] button and you will be presented with a graphical status of firewall.

Internet Security Software Update

STOP! Read me first before you upgrade your Internet Security Suite

Before we begin it’s important to know the difference between an Upgrade and a Subscription. Upgrades are new versions from the product manufacturer. A Subscription is a payment to the product manufacturer to continue to use the existing version.

Say you bought your computer in late 2005 and it came with an Internet Security package, lets say for example, Norton Internet Security 2005. Your annual Antivirus subscription is due for renewal late 2006. Most people will follow the on-screen prompts that guides you through the process. The default option, and the option that most people take, is the upgrade to the latest version for a few more pounds than the subscription cost. This is a costly mistake in the form of performance issues. Your computer was built in 2005 and the software you have just installed has been developed for the latest faster computers therefore you will experience performance slowdown. What if you choose the new subscription and not the update? Well you still get the Antivirus, Spyware and Spam filter definitions which is what Internet Security is all about but without the performance issues.

CDR Pumps launch new chemical pump

CDR Pumps have extended their pump portfolio with the introduction of a new range of peripheral turbine pumps, using the CDR mag-drive coupling, which has been hugely successful for more than 40 years
The pumps utilise the already hugely successful mag-drive coupling, and are available in either stainless steel, Hastelloy C, polypropylene or PVDF materials. CDR Pumps (UK) Managing Director Ashley Fenn says 'The introduction of the mag drive turbine pump opens a new set of doors for us in certain applications.
The pumps are designed for low flow and high head applications such as chemical injection or CIPapplications to mention a few.
The side channel impeller as they are sometimes called, offers almost no axial or radial loads on to the pump bearings, making the units ideal for a long trouble free life, and has the added bonus of being able to handle up to 20% air entrainment.
CDR Pumps have benefited from a number of new product lines and expansions over the last 18 months, and it cements our position as the leading manufacturer of magnetic drive pumps, and a serious contender for other chemical process pumps in the European markets that we serve, the turbine pump is a key product that we have been looking forward to having in our profile for many months'

The Credit Crunch.

Most of us have heard of the credit crunch, but few understand what effect this could have on the man in the street. The Ex-chancellor Gordon Brown maintained a stable economy by borrowing heavely to increase government spending, while also taxing us in every way he could.
Because the housing market has been booming we as a nation have been borrowing at an amazing rate[please see my other article]. As everyone knows you can't keep borrowing, as at some point it has to be paid back.
In the USA some institutions have been lending to "high risk" people and this has led to high arrears, and repossessions. Investors have become fearful of this and pulled out leaving nowhere to go for those people who are struggling with their repayments.
This in turn has affected the British market with many lenders reducing the amount they will lend, and charging higher rates to those who are classed as higher risk.
Therefore should you know or hear of anyone who may be having a problem with their mortgage or loan repayments, suggest that they get "independent" advice sooner rather than later, to allow time to plan a way forward.

Business Strategy - plot your path to success

“Good morning; before we start can I ask you to close your eyes, stand up and point towards Paris. Thank you; you can open your eyes now”.

There’s a problem; twenty people in the room and there are twenty different directions. What’s worse, not one of them is actually pointing towards Paris! Well, it could be worse; one person might know the direction, but not be believed or be able to communicate assertively that they know.

This is what it feels like to be in a Business without a clearly defined and communicated strategy. Where are we going? What am I supposed to be doing? What do you need form me? Why do we duplicate effort or leave gaps? Who are our competitors? Have we asked our customers, recently, what they really want? The list could go on!

Strategy is often devalued by being seen as “high level” and without any action orientation. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth for a good strategy – it should galvanise a Business. The purpose of the ‘whole’ should be clear and the parts of the individuals precisely and compatibly mapped.

Is strategy ‘difficult’? I don’t think so, but it can be horrendously over-complicated. Documents an inch thick are unlikely to galvanise Businesses – more likely to constipate them!

There are two important pre-requisites for a successful working strategy. Firstly, a thorough situation analysis looking at all the internal and external factors that impact the Businesses opportunity to make money. This will help to identify the positioning of the Business (and its tactics) to look attractively different in the market. Much of this ‘analysis’ should be done before any strategy meeting, not left to chance as part of the agenda. Does, “it’s about…..”; “we’ve got around….”; “that will do for now, I’ll ask when I’m back in the office”, ring a bell? There will always be some subjectivity (for example in market sizing), but too much is a strategy killer and leads, inevitably, to problems with the second important pre-requisite; the requirement for absolute buy-in across the Organisation.

If you have a politically fractured Business, then you’re on a sticky wicket to start with; even here, good strategy can limit the damage! But in an Organisation with a positive culture, ensuring a broad cross-functional input, healthy debate and ultimate agreement, will ensure complete synergy across the Business and lead to money-making success in an enjoyable environment.

History has shown that, be it in Warfare or Business, those with a good strategy prevail and prosper!

Saving Energy and the Environment

Supply of Compressed Air can represent up to 15% of the energy costs for a process manufacturer. As a utility totally in control of the host, it seems a good place to start Energy Save campaigns, writes Martin Lissenburg

A couple of months ago, I finally watched ‘An Inconvenient Truth’, a film highlighting Al Gore’s crusade to bring climate change to the fore. This film presents data that makes it virtually impossible to ignore the human impact on climate change. One ‘scene’ that particularly sticks in my mind relates to the variation in Carbon Dioxide concentration over time. For thousands of years, the line oscillates around a consistent value, up until the last few decades of the time axis; it then rapidly rises to the top of the chart and shows no sign of return! The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 2007 Summary for Policymakers, paints exactly the same picture; in virtually all measured parameters, the increases over the last decade far exceed those due to historic natural cycles, some measured over the previous hundreds of thousands of years.

How do we wake from this sleepwalk? Well, clearly global governmental action is vital, but we shouldn’t underestimate the impact of many “small” actions both at home and at work. Because air is all around us, there is a risk of seeing it as a free commodity – of course it isn’t. Driving air around a plant takes energy and, often, is done very inefficiently. Just think of how often you can hear the air supply! Leaks mean misplaced energy. Compressed Air is commonly used in Industrial facilities (~90% have air use in their processes). It is a utility completely in control of the host business and payback, on energy save schemes, is usually less than a year; so, it is a very good place to start energy efficiency campaigns.

The process starts with an Engineer “walking the site”, as it is vital to take a view of the complete air system. This is supported, if necessary, with air-leak detection and, always, by data logging of the Compressor. The data collection is critical as it gives quantified output that can be acted upon. The data logging process usually lasts around two weeks – long enough for all variations in duty to be monitored.
Our experience shows that the holistic approach to the air system brings ‘nested’ savings. For example, work with a customer – a well known manufacturer of roofing products – identified the need for a reduction in operating pressure, the fixing of numerous leaks and the opportunity for diversion of ‘waste’ heat, from the Compressor, into the workshop during winter, saving alternative heating costs. The total saving was £25,000 per annum.

The focus often falls, however, on the capital equipment in the process. A Packaging Manufacturer in the North-East found, after the energy appraisal, that their Compressor – a 75kW Rotary Screw – was spending significant amounts of time running off-load. The Compressor was sized to meet certain air demands during the production process, but the demand was variable due to the overall operation of equipment in the factory. This is not an atypical situation in a manufacturing plant. An Inverter Drive was specified and fitted to the Compressor, such that air was supplied to accurately meet demand requirements, with improved pressure control. The result was a 28% energy reduction over the year and payback for the total project was 12 months. A further benefit was reduction in the excessive wear and tear on the Compressor. The manufacturer is now looking at similar savings on eleven other sites in their Group, plus other areas of energy save.

A further case study relates to the requirement for high quality air – but supplied efficiently. This manufacturer of rock and asphalt products was using a 550cfm Desiccant Dryer, with the associated filtration, to provide its air quality, with standard (timer based) controls for the conditioning and cycling operation. A Dewpoint Switching Controller was specified and installed, such that the Dryer would only condition and cycle as required by the process. This has given a 58% saving in energy usage and payback is eight months, plus the additional benefit of significant reduction in wear and tear.

The above expertise can be applied to any ‘process motor’. An Automotive Component Manufacturers paint finishing plant utilised four pumps operating continuously, but damped to 60% flow by valves in the pipe-work system. Following the energy appraisal, Inverter Drives were installed to each pump motor, allowing the valves to be opened fully and, operating with a transducer, to provide the flow required by the process. The saving in energy was 48% per annum, with payback in nine months. This customer is now reviewing other process applications critically for energy savings.
Similar expertise has been applied to process motors used for extraction and air movement, with the same impact on efficiency.

The scale of bad debt across UK

Here are some facts:

At June 2007 UK personal debt stood at £1,345.billion.

There were 30,075 personal insolvencies in England and Wales in the 1st quarter of 2007. 24% up on last year.

4.1 million credit card payments were missed in the 1st 6 months of 2007.

A £12 fee is usually charged, giving a staggering £49,200,000 in charges not including interest.

All businesses should be aware that this level of debt will possibly have an adverse effect on them. Take independent advice and find out what measures can be taken to protect your business, because prevention is better than the cure.

What is Independent Financial Advice?

It used to be simple,if you wanted a mortgage you went to the local building society, if you needed to insure something you spoke to your local insurance agent.

Now banks, building societies, insurance brokers, and even supermarkets advertise mortgages, loans, car insurance, and even credit cards. How then do you know who is truely independent.

The bank

NO, which ever bank you choose they can only offer their own products, the same is the case for building societies.

Supermarkets

Supermarkets only offer the product not the advice, but again only the products that allow them to make a profit.

The web

Then we have comparison sites on the internet, are they really independent, or do the companies they reccommend pay them to be at the top of the lists.

The advisor

Who does the adviser work for ? you or the organisation they represent. The only way to be sure is to find an adviser who works for you, and charges you for the advice given, and refunds any commissions that may be available, giving you the best deal.
